About the BMI Calculator
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening metric developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to categorize adult weight status into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity categories.
How to Use the BMI Calculator
- 1Select your preferred unit system (Metric: cm/kg or Imperial: feet+inches/lbs).
- 2Enter your height and weight accurately.
- 3Click "Calculate BMI" to see your score, category indicator, and healthy target weight range.
How It Works & Underlying Logic
BMI is calculated by dividing body weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. In imperial units, weight in pounds is multiplied by 703 and divided by height in inches squared.
Metric: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]² | Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) / [height (inches)]²Practical Calculation Examples
Metric Calculation
Adult weighing 68 kg with a height of 175 cm (1.75 m)
Imperial Calculation
Adult weighing 160 lbs with a height of 5 ft 10 in (70 in)
Helpful Tips & Best Practices
- •BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure of body fat percentage or cardiovascular fitness.
- •Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without having excess body fat.
